Arabica
Coffea arabica
The most commercially important coffee species, prized for its nuanced flavors and aromatic complexity. Native to the highland forests of southwestern Ethiopia and the Boma Plateau of Sudan, Arabica thrives at higher elevations where cooler temperatures slow cherry maturation and concentrate sugars. It is self-pollinating and more susceptible to diseases like coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) than its Robusta counterpart, but its superior cup quality commands premium prices worldwide.
Robusta
Coffea canephora
The hardier and more disease-resistant of the two dominant commercial species, Robusta is native to the forests of central and western sub-Saharan Africa. Its higher caffeine content acts as a natural insect deterrent, and the plant tolerates warmer lowland climates where Arabica would fail. Robusta forms the backbone of instant coffee and Italian-style espresso blends, contributing heavy body and a persistent crema. Fine Robusta, a growing specialty niche, can exhibit notes of chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit when carefully processed.
